Highlights during your visit to Salzburg City

Visitors come to Salzburg from around the world because they know that the beauty of this city surprises around every corner, turning every spontaneous walk through the historic district into an exciting treasure hunt. The wealth of sporting and shopping opportunities is also a magnet for holidaymakers.

Hohensalzburg Fortress

Visible from far afield and looking out over everything: Hohensalzburg Fortress is enthroned high above Salzburg City. One of the biggest fully preserved castle fortifications in Europe, it once guaranteed the security as well as the astonishing wealth of the city. It isn’t only the views that make it worthwhile going up there, either by funicular or on foot. During a guided tour of the fortress, you will experience a variety of important historical highlights along with that magnificent scenery.

The historic district: a Baroque jewel

Barely anywhere else north of the Alps will you find as many churches, magnificent buildings, plazas and fountains as you do here in Salzburg. Meandering between them are narrow lanes, foremost of which is the world-famous Getreidegasse. Museums, churches and shaded coffeehouses are ideal whenever you prefer to escape the bustling streets.

Between Linzergasse and Mirabell Gardens

For the most famous picture-postcard motif in the entire province, you should head over to the other side of the River Salzach. There, you will stroll from the “Platzl” up Linzergasse, then via charming side streets across to Mirabellplatz. This part of the city is dominated by the gigantic Mirabell Gardens, some of the most beautiful of their kind in all of Europe.

Mountains in the middle of the city

A walk across the city mountains reveals a very different side of Salzburg. On the Mönchsberg, the many pathways through dense forests will give you the feeling you have long since left the city far behind. But then, you will land up at one of the fabulous lookout points above the rooftops, such as the Museum der Moderne with its rotating art exhibitions. You will continue through old fortifications all the way out to Hohensalzburg Fortress. Across from you is the Kapuzinerberg, which is actually the higher of the two city mountains. During your walk from the Linzergasse, past the monastery and up to the Franziskischlössl – by which point, you will definitely have earned a refreshment break – with a little bit of luck, you might even catch sight of one of the chamois which live wild up here.

Hellbrunn Palace, Park and Zoo

Next to the palace with its technical masterpiece, the Trick Fountains, as well as the enormous Hellbrunn Park with the Rock Theater, you will also find the zoo, highly recommended for families with children especially. Hellbrunn is perfect for those hot summer days when you don’t mind getting a little wet. For current information about the zoo, please visit the website of Zoo Salzburg. On their own website, you will also find lots of interesting information about Schloss Hellbrunn and the Trick Fountains.
There is so much more to see and discover in Salzburg. From charming Nonntal and Leopoldskron, to the many small boutiques and shops in the historic district.
